Physical Education at Our Lady of the Rosary

At Our Lady of the Rosary, we believe that high-quality Physical Education (PE) is essential to every child’s development. Our PE curriculum enables pupils to develop physical competence, confidence, and a lifelong love of movement and sport. We encourage all children to take part in a wide range of physical activities, developing teamwork, resilience, and an understanding of the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Our Approach to Teaching PE

PE is taught through a well-sequenced curriculum from the Early Years to Year 6. Lessons follow the Real PE approach, which develops six key areas of learning: personal, social, cognitive, creative, physical, and health and fitness. These skills are embedded through a range of engaging activities including gymnastics, dance, athletics, games, outdoor adventurous activities, and swimming.

Every class from Reception to Year 6 is also taught by a specialist sports coach from Brentford Football Club Community Sports Trust, who works alongside school staff to deliver high-quality, progressive lessons. This partnership ensures that pupils benefit from expert coaching, skill development, and structured progression in physical education.

Children are supported to improve at their own pace, setting personal goals and learning to reflect on their progress. Retrieval opportunities are built into lessons to reinforce key skills and vocabulary, ensuring pupils build on previous learning as they move through the school.

Our curriculum also promotes inclusion and enjoyment, providing adapted opportunities for all pupils to succeed and develop confidence in their own abilities.

Developing Physical Skills and Understanding

Children are taught to master fundamental movement skills such as agility, balance, and coordination before applying these in a range of sports and team games. As they progress through Key Stage 2, they refine their understanding of tactics, fair play, and leadership.

Swimming is an important part of our curriculum, with pupils learning essential water safety skills and developing confidence as swimmers. We also provide opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles, including through our Sports Crew, who help to organise activities and encourage others to stay active during playtimes and school events.

Enrichment and Wider Opportunities

Our PE curriculum is enriched through a wide range of sporting opportunities both in school and beyond. Pupils take part in inter-school competitions, sports festivals, and events through the School Games, for which we are proud to have achieved the Gold School Games Mark (2024–25). Younger pupils’ participation and progress have also been recognised with the 2 Star KS1 Star Mark Award, reflecting our commitment to high-quality early physical development.

Children have the opportunity to work with visiting coaches and sports specialists who help to develop sport-specific skills and encourage participation across a variety of disciplines. We also field a number of school sports teams, including football, swimming and athletics, giving pupils the chance to represent the school and develop teamwork, commitment, and pride.

In addition to curriculum PE, we offer a range of extra-curricular clubs such as gymnastics, tennis, and dance. These clubs encourage perseverance, collaboration, and enjoyment of physical activity while promoting healthy habits for life.

Continuing the Journey

As pupils move through Our Lady of the Rosary, they develop physical competence, confidence, and a positive attitude towards fitness and wellbeing. They leave ready for the next stage of their education, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to lead active, healthy lives and to participate fully in sport and physical activity.
